No! Many riders join with little to no trail experience. You don’t need to know anything coming in because we’ll walk you through everything step-by-step and help you build confidence as you go.
If you’re not sure what level you are at, you’re not alone at all, this is definitely a super popular question that we get!
Most riders in our skills clinics are somewhere between brand new and intermediate, with lots of beginners in the group as well.
If you want a bit more clarity, we’ve put together a simple guide to rider levels. And if you’re still unsure, feel free to reach out to get our input.
We also have a post about what happens in a clinic that you can check out!
You betcha, many people start mountain biking later in life and go on to become confident, capable riders. It just takes the right approach, a bit of patience, and a supportive environment. So many of our very good riding friends did not start mountain biking until they were "grown ups"! Or in some cases, they mountain biked as teeny tiny children and then took LONG breaks before picking it up again as adults.
This is one of the most common concerns, and it almost never plays out that way.
Everyone shows up with different strengths, and most riders feel unsure about something. The focus isn’t on keeping up, it’s on learning at your own pace and building confidence over time.
It can be nerve-wracking doing a new thing for the first time in a group setting, so we try really hard to create a supportive environment to make you as comfortable as possible. If this is a feeling you cannot shake and it's preventing you from getting out there, please consider a private mountain biking lesson with one of our coaches instead!
Totally normal! We don’t push speed or force anything. You’ll learn how to control your bike, understand what’s happening, and build confidence gradually.
This isn’t going to be like junior high gym class at all! You’re always in control of what you choose to ride.
Maybe you will be on one trail, and then on the next trail or the next skill we are working on someone else will be behind you.
We design sessions so everyone can move at their own pace, and there’s no pressure to keep up. The goal isn’t speed, it’s building skills and confidence.
You don’t need to be in peak shape to join.
Most riders coming to us are not training for anything specific. They just want to feel more comfortable and confident on their bike. Some people are very active, some are getting back into movement after a break, and some are starting from scratch.
We take breaks, keep things manageable, and focus on skills rather than fitness. Your fitness will naturally improve as you ride more, but a certain fitness level is not a requirement to get started.
If you’re able to ride a bike and are curious to learn, you’re in the right place!
It’s normal to be unsure where you fit because most riders don’t fit neatly into one category. If you feel confident in some situations but not others, or like you’re still figuring things out, our programs are likely a good fit.
If you want a clearer breakdown, check out our rider levels guide.
It’s different for everyone.
A lot of riders start to feel more comfortable and in control within a few sessions, especially if they’re riding in between. The little things start to click, and those small improvements build on each other.
If it ever feels slower than you hoped, you’re not alone. Everyone moves at their own pace, and confidence takes time. The important part is that it does come, and usually sooner than it feels like in the moment.
Yes, our coaches and ride leaders are trained in first aid and carry what they need during sessions.
Beyond that, safety shows up in how we teach. We meet riders where they’re at, keep things at an appropriate level, and focus on building confidence step-by-step. No pressure, no pushing you into something that doesn’t feel right!
Mountain biking always has some level of risk, but our goal is to help you feel more in control and confident every time you ride.
That’s a completely normal feeling.
A lot of riders feel this way at some point. Learning new skills on a bike can take time, and it doesn’t always click immediately.
We’ll help you work through things step-by-step, give you lots of space to practice, and adjust how we explain things until it starts to make sense.
There’s no expectation to get it right away, and no pressure to keep up with anyone else. You’re not behind, you're learning.
